A Pakistani court has sentenced a man to death for the murder of a 17-year-old social media influencer, in a case that has shocked the country.

Umar Hayat forced his way into the home of 17-year-old TikTok star Sana Yousaf in June last year after she rejected his repeated advances and shot him dead.

The 23-year-old confessed to the crime in July last year, saying he had developed an obsession with Yousaf after meeting him online.

The girl's father said the verdict given by the Islamabad court was "a lesson to all such criminals in society," the BBC reported.

The court also ordered the perpetrator to pay 2.5 million rupees (around 7,700 euros) in compensation to the victim's family.

During the investigation, Hayat stated that he had traveled to Islamabad a few days before the murder to wish his daughter a happy birthday. Despite her refusal to meet him, he managed to go to her house where the two got into an argument, with Hayat about to be killed, Pakistani media reported.

Yousaf had over a million followers on TikTok and another 500,000 on Instagram. She would talk about the latest fashion trends, lip-sync, and just hang out with her friends.

The last video she posted on her account was a few hours before her murder, in which she was waiting for a birthday cake.
