A serious incident has been recorded in the city of Curitiba, Brazil, where authorities killed a man who was holding 13 children hostage at a school, threatening them with a knife. The situation lasted more than two hours, and fortunately none of the children were injured.

According to Paraná state police spokeswoman Leticia Martins, the man forced his way into the CMEI São Braz school, scaling a wall to enter a classroom, where he took children and staff members hostage. During the incident, he threatened to douse himself and others with gasoline. Police negotiation teams arrived at the scene and attempted to resolve the situation, but, according to Martins, authorities had no other option than to neutralize him.

The spokeswoman did not provide details on how the suspect was killed or his possible motives. She said some children managed to escape the school before the hostage situation began. Meanwhile, local police commander Alexandre López Díaz said the suspect had been identified as a person suffering from schizophrenia, but did not disclose his identity. The incident took place in the São Braz neighborhood of Curitiba, a city of about 1.8 million people, located about 400 kilometers south of São Paulo.

Footage broadcast by local media showed worried parents waiting outside the school as police negotiated with the suspect. After the operation, officers were seen escorting children out of the building. The city of Curitiba said the children and school staff would receive psychological support following the incident.
