The 2-year-old girl of Albanian origin, who drowned in a fountain in the Kallithea area, is in critical condition. Greek media report that the next 24 hours are a decision-making period for her condition, while doctors are optimistic. The incident occurred within a few minutes, causing panic among the citizens who were in the area. Passers-by pulled the child out of the water and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) attempts were made for about 40 minutes.

A witness okular, speaking on the show “Kalimera Ellada”, described the dramatic moments: “I happened to be passing by the area, as I live here. At first I didn’t see anyone. When I returned, everyone had gathered. The chef of a cafe was trying to revive her. The screams of parents and children could be heard. A lady called 166 and a passing patrol car stopped to help.” The child was urgently transported, under police escort, to the “Aglaia Kyriakou” Children’s Hospital, where doctors managed to revive her after long efforts. She is currently intubated and admitted to the intensive care unit, in critical condition.

According to information so far, the child was in Cyprus Square with her father. At one point, it is suspected that she escaped his attention and, under still unclear circumstances, fell into the fountain. It is reported that the girl remained unconscious in the water for several minutes, until she was noticed by passers-by. A police patrol that happened to be passing through the area immediately intervened and transported the child to the hospital, before the EKAB ambulance arrived. The following hours are considered crucial for the progress of her health condition.
