A serious incident shook the rural area of Nea Michaniona in Greece, where a 90-year-old man was arrested after burying a dog alive, after previously gagged it with duct tape. The episode was discovered on Wednesday morning, when a passerby noticed the act and immediately notified the authorities.
Officers from the Thermaikos Police Department quickly arrived at the scene and found the 17-year-old dog still alive, albeit traumatized. The animal was immediately taken to the Association for the Protection and Environment of Stray Animals of Eastern Thessaloniki (SYPPAZATH), where it is reportedly in good health and receiving professional care.
According to preliminary information, the 90-year-old is suspected of telling officers that he thought the dog - which belonged to his daughter - was dead and therefore took the unacceptable action. However, his claim is being verified by authorities, who consider the case a serious violation of animal welfare law.
The elderly man was imposed an administrative fine of 30,300 euros, while the case has been referred for further criminal prosecution.
