A stuffed horse toy has gone viral in China, just weeks before the Chinese New Year celebrations. The reason? An unusual detail in its appearance, which was initially considered a manufacturing error. The toy, which was designed to have a smiling expression, ended up on the market with its mouth sewn upside down, giving it the appearance of a horse that looks like it is crying. This strange expression, rather than harming the product, turned it into an instant hit on Chinese social media, where users christened it the “crying horse.”

According to vendors at Yiwu International Trade City, one of China's largest wholesale markets, it all started with a human error during the production process. Initially, the toy was deemed defective and the customer was offered a refund, but a photo of it was shared on social media and the public reaction was unexpected.

A "mistake" that became a trend, the story of the "horse"

Within days, the “crying horse” became a symbol of humor and irony, especially for office workers, who said the toy’s expression reflected their daily feelings of work stress. Demand for the toy increased significantly, and many stores reported that stock sold out in record time.

The phenomenon is also linked to the trend of toys called “ugly-cute”, products that are not aesthetically perfect, but that precisely for this reason create emotional connections with buyers. Due to the unexpected success, manufacturers have decided to continue producing this “wrong” model, now turned into a brand. A small mistake in sewing, but a huge success in the market, the “crying horse” is the latest example of how social networks can turn a defect into a national trend.
