A cluster of meningitis cases has been recorded in the county of Berkshire in southern England, where one student has died and two others are in hospital, according to a statement from the United Kingdom Health Safety Agency (UKHSA).

As she explains, three cases involve young people associated with a college in the area. One of them is related to meningitis type B and the results of other laboratory tests are awaited.

People who have come into contact with cases of meningitis have been given antibiotics as a precaution.

A pathologist in the area where the cases were identified said the young man who died was a student at Henley College, adding that health authorities have been in contact with those who came into contact with him.

British health authorities emphasize that meningococcal disease is spread through close contact and that the risk to the general public remains low.

In March, a meningitis outbreak in Kent, England, claimed two lives out of 27 confirmed cases, increasing demand for vaccines.
