The former Secretary of Administration and Finance of the state of Sinaloa, Enrique Díaz Vega, has surrendered to authorities in New York City to face serious charges of drug trafficking and suspected ties to the "Los Chapitos" faction of the Sinaloa cartel.
According to the indictment from the Federal Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, Díaz Vega is suspected of playing a key role in the connections between the criminal group and the administration of former Sinaloa governor Rubén Rocha Moya.
The investigation alleges that he helped infiltrate corrupt officials into state structures to protect the activities of the drug cartel. US authorities also accuse him of serving as an intermediary between leaders of “Los Chapitos” — the faction led by the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán — and local authorities during the 2021 election campaign.
According to the charges, he also distributed information about political opponents for intimidation and attacks, in favor of the ruling Morena party of President Claudia Sheinbaum. However, so far there has been no official confirmation from the US authorities of his extradition or the details of the judicial proceedings.
