Swiss authorities have confirmed a case of hantavirus in a passenger on the MV Hondius cruise ship, raising concerns about the possible spread of the infection.
According to official reports, the passenger checked himself into a hospital in Zurich after being informed of the incident through a communication from the company managing the ship. He is currently receiving medical treatment and is under monitoring.
In accordance with international health regulations, the World Health Organization has begun working with the countries involved to trace possible contacts and prevent further spread of the virus. Laboratory tests have confirmed that it is Andean hantavirus, a more aggressive variant known for severe cases of the disease.
The confirmation was made by institutions such as the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in South Africa and the University Hospitals of Geneva in Switzerland, with the support of international laboratories in Senegal and Argentina. As of May 6, a total of 8 suspected cases have been reported, of which 3 have been confirmed by laboratory analysis.
WHO emphasizes that it will continue to monitor the situation and cooperate with relevant authorities to ensure the information and safety of passengers, crew and possible contacts, as well as to limit any risk of further spread of the virus.
