A 68-year-old Albanian citizen has been arrested by Greek authorities in Florence, suspected of transporting a significant amount of narcotics. The arrest was carried out during an operation carried out by the Criminal Investigation and Prosecution structures, as part of the fight against international drug trafficking.
According to the Greek police, after collecting and analyzing operational information, officers located the vehicle driven by the 68-year-old in the early hours of the morning. During the search of the vehicle, two travel bags and a bag were discovered, where 50 packages of marijuana were hidden, with a total weight of 55 kilograms and 422 grams.
Three mobile phones were also seized as part of the investigation, which are expected to be analyzed to identify other persons involved in this criminal activity. Greek authorities emphasize that in recent months an increase in cases of drug trafficking from Albania to Greece has been observed. According to official data, over 1.2 tons of marijuana have been seized in the regions of Igoumenitsa, Ioannina, Kostur, Florina and Thessaloniki in the last 11 months.
Investigations have shown that a significant portion of these quantities are suspected to have been transported via the Saranda-Igoumenitsa route, which remains one of the most used routes by criminal groups. In a previous operation, Greek authorities also blocked a speedboat loaded with narcotics in the port of Igoumenitsa.
