Although Albania has the lowest number of vehicles per inhabitant in Europe, it has the highest level of road accidents resulting in loss of life.

Official statistics show that in most cases the fault stems from non-implementation of traffic rules by both drivers and pedestrians. But a recent statistic of the Directorate of Road Transport showed the deplorable state of knowledge of drivers driving vehicles in our country.

Out of 429 re-registrations after losing all points of the Driving Permit, only 44 people have regained the Driving Permit, the General Directorate of Road Transport announced today. As can be seen, only 10.2% of drivers who have been caught in violation have managed to regain their license.

Further, DPTRR clarified that there were only 3 passers in the Driver's License Recovery Test, in the 20th re-testing session since the implementation of the new restrictive provision with return to Driving School (June 6, 2022), out of 25 candidates for this session.

"For those who we consider to be serious violators of traffic rules, repeaters in behavior that endangers themselves and others on the road, that with the new acts in force to regain the right to a license must be registered from the beginning in Driving school to re-submit the theory-practice test" the Transport Directorate reacted today.

The DPTRR called to respect the rules of the road because "if you lose all the points, you will return to the Driving School and then under strict monitoring you will regain your license only if you have no more than 3 errors in the Questionnaire of the Rules of Conduct with 30 sentences as well as if you pass the practice test, both tests under e-Monitoring".

Road accidents resulting in death and injury are a balance of war in our country. Only in April of this year there were 69 road accidents. In 87,0% of cases, they occurred as a result of the driver's behavior. The highest number of accidents in this period was committed by the age group up to 24 years old, accounting for 24,6% of the total number of accidents.

During the last year, there were 1.165 road accidents out of 1.376 accidents that occurred in 2021.

Accidents in 79,0% of cases occurred as a result of the driver's behavior. The highest number of accidents in 2022 was committed by the 25-34 age group, accounting for 28,6% and in 14,3% of the cases they occurred as a result of pedestrian behavior.

At the end of 2021, there were about 590 vehicles registered across the country. With general data, 1 in 5 Albanians has a car. Comparison with other Eurostat data shows that Albania has this indicator much lower than the average of the European Union, where one in two inhabitants has a car (0.53 cars per inhabitant).
