In a festive and symbolic atmosphere, the United States Embassy in Tirana organized a reception on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of US Independence, where Chargé d'Affaires VanHorn praised the close relations between the two countries and the sacrifices of those who have contributed to freedom and democracy.
In her speech, VanHorn thanked the Albanian authorities, the diplomatic corps, and the guests present, describing the 250th anniversary of the United States as a historical moment of particular importance.
"On July 4, 1776, a group of American visionaries declared to the world that all men are created equal, with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. For 250 years, these ideals have inspired not only Americans, but also peoples who have aspired to live free," she said.
The American diplomat praised Albania's journey from isolation and dictatorship to democracy and Euro-Atlantic integration, calling it one of the most important success stories in modern times.
"Albanians know well the desire for freedom. This country's journey from oppression to democracy and Western alliance is an inspiring story, built on the courage and sacrifice of its citizens," VanHorn said.
A special moment of the speech was dedicated to the memory of two Albanian employees of the American Embassy, Loni Adami and Kol Kuqali, who lost their lives during the communist regime after refusing to testify falsely against the United States. VanHorn said that he had recently met their descendants and described the resilience of their families as a testament to the unwavering faith in Albanian-American freedom and friendship.
“Their belief that one day Albania would be free and connected to the United States remains an inspiration to us all,” she emphasized. In her speech, the American diplomat also underlined the importance of the partnership between Albania and the United States in the fields of security, economy, education and the promotion of democratic values.
She thanked all those who contribute every day to strengthening this relationship, from military and emergency services personnel, to educators, entrepreneurs, journalists and community leaders. “Our bond is stronger today than ever. Thank you for your partnership, for your legendary Albanian hospitality and commitment to the values we share,” said VanHorn.
Raising a toast at the end of the ceremony, she conveyed a message of optimism for the future of relations between the two countries. “Happy 250 years of freedom and many more to come. Happy America's 250th birthday and Happy Fourth of July!” the diplomat concluded.
