After 16 years, Greek authorities have made a significant development in the investigation into the arson attack on the Marfin bank branch in Athens, an event that on May 5, 2010, shocked Greece and caused the deaths of three employees.
The Directorate for the Fight against Organized Crime arrested two 42-year-old men during operations conducted in the Kypseli and Chalandri areas, in implementation of arrest warrants issued by the authorities.
Meanwhile, a 46-year-old woman is on the international wanted list for the same case. According to authorities, she fled to the United Kingdom six years ago, where she has been living since. An international arrest warrant has been issued for her and British authorities have been informed of its execution.
The investigation into the tragedy was reopened after police received an anonymous email naming three people as the suspected perpetrators of the attack. Investigators then compared evidence from the 2010 case file with material from other cases under investigation, identifying similarities in the physical characteristics and clothing of the suspects.
The case file for the arson attack, which occurred on May 5, 2010 at the Marfin Bank branch on Stadiou Street and claimed the lives of three employees, has been officially reopened and is being handled by the third regular investigator, while authorities continue their actions to fully unravel one of the most serious events in modern Greek history.
