Former Minister of Interior and Colonel, Dritan Demiraj, invited to the show "This Week" on News24, has commented on the recent developments in the war in Iran, warning of the possibility of a new military conflict in Taiwan.
According to him, the US has moved a large number of military forces from bases in Japan and South Korea to the Middle East, including aircraft carriers, destroyers and other support assets. This, according to Demiraj, makes it difficult to project force for another major conflict, for which the US has been preparing for years.
He stressed that a new clash could occur in the second half of 2027 and early 2028, linking this to Xi Jinping's expressed ambitions to take control of Taiwan, initially through peaceful means.
According to Demiraj, if this effort fails and a military offensive is launched, the US and its allies in the region, including Japan, South Korea and Taiwan itself, will be forced to intervene to stop such a scenario.
He concluded that current developments point to an increase in global tensions and a new phase of geopolitical rivalries, which could lead to further escalation on the international stage.
