Moo Deng, the pygmy hippopotamus from Thailand who became a social media phenomenon in 2024, has made her prediction for the winner of the World Cup final, which will take place on Sunday.

The small hippopotamus, which lives at Khao Kheow Zoo, about 110 kilometers east of Bangkok, chose without hesitation one of two watermelons prepared by the keepers. She showed a preference for the watermelon with the inscription ARG and the flag of Argentina. The director of the zoo explained to the media that this activity is organized to entertain visitors, but also to provide the animal with stimulation and exercise. He stressed that this should not be interpreted as support for a particular team nor be linked to activities such as betting, which are prohibited in Thailand.

Last Tuesday, in a similar event, Moo Deng had picked France and England as the two nations she thought would face off in the World Cup final, but this prediction turned out to be wrong. The animal has become famous for its attractive appearance and friendly demeanor. Earlier, it also became part of the international spotlight after “predicting” Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election in November 2024.

Moo Deng, whose name translates from Thai as “Jumping Piglet,” is a two-year-old female pygmy hippopotamus. Although her predictive abilities have no scientific basis, other animals have previously become famous for similar predictions. One of the most famous cases is Paul the octopus, who in 2010 correctly predicted Spain’s victory in the World Cup held in South Africa.
