At least 20 people have been killed in attacks blamed on the jihadist group Boko Haram in the northeastern states of Borno and Adamawa in Nigeria, Reuters news agency reported, citing local officials.
Gunmen on motorbikes attacked the villages of Pumbagu and Mayo Lande, regional official Manda Saidu said. He said 11 people were killed in Pumbagu and nine in Mayo Lande, adding that the attackers burned houses and shops and looted food.
Northeastern Nigeria has been the scene of a jihadist insurgency since 2009, with Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) group (ISIL emerged from a split from Boko Haram) spreading death, forcing hundreds of thousands of residents to flee their homes and causing a humanitarian crisis in the wider region.
