A train derailed on Monday morning in the Goppenstein area of the Swiss canton of Valais after an avalanche hit the tracks. Cantonal police confirmed that an operation was underway at the scene and that several people were injured.
According to a post from the local police on platform X, security forces immediately rushed to the scene of the incident, while initial reports indicate injuries to passengers. A spokesman for the BLS railway company confirmed that the derailment was caused by an avalanche hitting the tracks. The train derailed in the Stockgrabe area, between Goppenstein and Hochten, in the canton of Valais, Pomona reported. There were 80 passengers on board. The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) announced that traffic on the line would remain suspended until at least 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
The BLS told the website Blick that the derailed train was a regional express train that had departed from Spitz, in the canton of Bern, at around 6:00 a.m. According to the company, the process of removing passengers from the train would begin immediately. Authorities are continuing the operation at the scene, while official announcements on the condition of the passengers and the exact causes of the incident are awaited.
