The bad weather that hit the southern suburbs of Attica yesterday afternoon proved deadly. A 56-year-old woman lost her life in Ano Glyfada after being swept away by torrential rain waters.
The serious incident occurred shortly after 20:00 p.m. on Wednesday, when the victim, returning from work, attempted to cross the road at the intersection of Kyrillou and Methodiou streets with Konstantinou Paleologou. At that moment, a powerful stream descended from the mountain towards Kyrillou and Methodiou streets, sweeping the woman away and trapping her under a vehicle that had previously been displaced by the large amount of water.
Local residents, who saw the scene, immediately notified the authorities. Firefighters arrived at the scene and pulled the 56-year-old woman from under the car, but unfortunately she was unconscious and did not survive.
An eyewitness described the dramatic moments: "She was crossing the road to return home. The stream immediately took her. She was trapped under the car and we could not save her. The water was very strong, with stones. Only her legs were visible. She was 56 years old and had a family, a daughter". Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident, while bad weather has caused numerous problems in the area, with flooding and material damage. Meanwhile, a tragic accident occurred in Astros of Kynouria, where a 53-year-old coast guard lost his life while performing his duty. The victim held the rank of second lieutenant and served as an officer in the Port Department of the area.
According to the official announcement of the Hellenic Coast Guard, the 53-year-old was on foot patrol in the port, together with the commander of the Port Department. While the ships were anchoring, a strong wave swept him away, causing a serious head injury.
The Coast Guard was immediately pulled from the water unconscious and transported to the area Health Center, where doctors pronounced him dead. Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident, while the Coast Guard service expressed condolences for the loss of the officer, who lost his life in the line of duty.
