One person has died and three others are missing after a boat capsized near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay.
The San Francisco Fire Department announced that it received an alarm about a vessel in distress, about 600 yards off the famous island.
The first rescue teams to arrive found a man in the water in critical condition. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead after being pulled to shore.
According to authorities, there were about 20 people on board the boat, mostly family members, who were attending a memorial service. The three-deck boat, identified as the “Volare,” was about 15 meters long.
Three other people were injured and taken to a local hospital, where they are in stable condition. Meanwhile, 13 people were rescued without injury and returned to shore.
The search and rescue operation by the San Francisco Fire Department and the US Coast Guard continues to find three missing people.
Authorities initially received a report of a ship on fire, but witnesses later said the boat had run into problems due to rough seas, started taking on water and then capsized.
