US Congressman Keith Self has called for increased diplomatic pressure on the five NATO member states that have not yet recognized Kosovo, stressing that its full integration into Euro-Atlantic structures is essential for the stability of the region.
Self made the statements during a hearing at the US Congressional Foreign Affairs Committee, where security developments in the Balkans and the US role in Southeast Europe were discussed.
According to the Republican congressman, the fact that some NATO countries continue to not recognize Kosovo's independence creates political and institutional obstacles that hinder its advancement in the Euro-Atlantic security architecture.
"Full international recognition of Kosovo and its future membership in NATO are key elements for guaranteeing long-term peace and stability in the Balkans," Self declared.
He underlined that in the face of global tensions and new security challenges, American support for Kosovo remains crucial not only for the region, but also for strengthening democracy and stability in Southeast Europe.
Self also added that US engagement in the Western Balkans must continue, including closer coordination with NATO allies on the Kosovo issue.
Kosovo declared independence in 2008 and has been recognized by most NATO and European Union countries, however five Alliance countries continue to not recognize it, remaining one of the main obstacles in Pristina's international integration process.
