For Brian and Sarah Orozco, a long-lasting marriage isn't built on perfect moments. It's built on how you stick by each other when life gets tough.

In the 27 years they've been together, they've gone through challenges that have tested both their relationship and their resilience. From financial hardships to unexpected diagnoses, as they say, life has often seemed overwhelming.

“The biggest challenges we faced were definitely the unexpected diagnoses, the financial struggles, and the weight of this difficult situation called life,” they told PEOPLE. Raising their children while trying to meet everyone’s needs added to the pressure.

There were times, they say, when they felt like life was pulling them in completely different directions. However, over the years they developed a way of understanding when they needed to reconnect.

“Every time this starts to happen, at least one of us understands and brings us back together,” they explain. This awareness has become a key element in how they manage difficult periods in their lives.

Communication, they say, has been key to keeping their relationship strong. Equally important is the ability to adapt and support each other when someone is going through a difficult time.

“The key to staying together was definitely open communication… and being there to support each other when someone is hurting,” they say. At the same time, they emphasize that their faith has been another pillar of support for their relationship over time.

Even after nearly three decades together, they say their relationship hasn't gotten lost in the routine. They continue to celebrate important moments and appreciate the small, meaningful gestures that make each other feel loved.
