A piece of dark chocolate a day lowers blood pressure and protects arteries.
Rich in flavonoids, it is linked to improving cardiovascular health by increasing blood flow, lowering blood pressure, reducing bad cholesterol (LDL), preventing blood clots and improving arterial function, according to "News Medical."
Dark chocolate should be consumed in moderation as a dessert due to its calorie and fat content.
The research, led by researchers at the University of Surrey, suggests using flavonoids – a class of plant-based polyphenols found in foods such as tea, cocoa, berries and apples, known for health benefits such as improving cardiovascular health by increasing endothelial function and lowering blood pressure.
Their positive effects extend to anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic actions, modestly lowering blood pressure and supporting vascular health.
Analyzing data from 145 studies, the team found that regular intake of foods rich in flavonoids led to a reduction in blood pressure, especially in people with high blood pressure.
In some participants, the reduction in blood pressure was comparable to that achieved with some blood pressure medications, highlighting the potential of diet as an adjunct tool in cardiovascular prevention and management.
Beyond blood pressure, flavonoids were shown to improve endothelial function, increasing blood vessel performance – regardless of any changes in blood pressure.
