Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is pressing the club to sign Martin Zubimendi from Arsenal after the Gunners secured the services of Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes in a deal reportedly worth around £75m.

The Brazilian's arrival in north London has fuelled speculation that the Spanish midfielder, who joined Arsenal only last summer, could leave. Zubimendi made a positive start to his time at Arsenal following his £60m move from Real Sociedad. But then things took a turn for the worse. He fell out of favour in the latter stages of the season and was not even a starter in the Champions League final, which Arsenal lost to Paris Saint-Germain.

English newspaper Metro, citing Mundo Deportivo, reports that Guimaraes' transfer has left Zubimendi in a "uncertain position", with his future at the Emirates far from clear. Real Madrid are said to be considering another move for Zubimendi, after failing to sign him last summer. However, the La Liga giants will face "strong competition".

Chelsea are pushing hard, with new manager Alonso determined to bring Zubimendi to Stamford Bridge. He knows the midfielder well, having worked with him during his time at Real Sociedad before attempting to sign him during his brief spell at Real Madrid. Arsenal's stance on a potential sale remains unclear, but Mundo Deportivo claim the London club are demanding at least €90m, around £77m, to give the green light for Zubimendi to leave.
