The High Court in Subotica has extended until September 9 the detention of two people arrested on the Serbian-Hungarian border in June, whom German media have reported as Russian agents, the Balkan Service of Radio Free Europe (REL) has learned from this institution.
The High Public Prosecutor's Office in Subotica, in the province of Vojvodina, Serbia, had previously launched an investigation against BD and GJ.S. for illegal possession and storage of weapons, ammunition and explosives, as co-perpetrators, while BD is also being investigated for the criminal offense of document forgery.
The prosecution refers to the article and paragraph of the Serbian Criminal Code, which stipulate that the suspects were carrying weapons without authorization, for which they had permission to use them.
The case was first reported by German media. The Bild newspaper reported that special forces had arrested two people suspected of being "disposable" agents of the Russian secret services at the Hungarian-Serbian border in early June.
According to the allegations, they were temporarily engaged, without any permanent assignment, and had planned to plant explosives in Germany.
A Bild report, published in July, also said that explosives were found in the suspects' luggage, and added that it was not clear what the planned target of the attack in Germany was.
Investigators reportedly believe the target may have been linked to the production or shipment of military equipment to Ukraine.
That same month, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said that German services had prevented an explosives attack targeting Germany, and that it was a top-secret case.
German police refused to provide REL with more details about the case.
The High Public Prosecutor's Office did not want to provide more details about this case and it is not known what nationality the persons under investigation are.
In Serbia, in recent years, there have been several cases of arrests due to suspected links to Russian intelligence services.
Six months before their arrest on the Serbian-Hungarian border, three people were convicted by a court in Serbia of spying for Russia and inciting incidents against Jewish and Muslim communities in France and Germany.
They were arrested along with eight other suspects, against whom the competent prosecution in Smederevo, in central Serbia, is still conducting investigations.
Also, in September 2025, two people were arrested in western Serbia on suspicion of organizing a training camp near the town of Loznica for clashes with police during election day in Moldova.
Moldovan police had previously released a video, which they said showed "military camps in Serbia organized by the Russian secret service."
The two suspected Serbian citizens, Lazar Popović and Sava Stevanović, were released after questioning to defend themselves in freedom, while the Prosecution in Šabac has not yet filed an indictment in this case.
Lazar Popović and Sava Stevanović are connected to the current minister without portfolio in the Serbian Government, Nenad Popović, who has business ties in Russia./ REL
