A common dolphin has been spotted for some time in the small port of Grignano, Gulf of Trieste, within the Miramare marine protected area. The animal interacted with buoys and submerged rope, a fairly frequent behavior among solitary dolphins: however, according to experts, it could be indicative of a state of social and sexual deprivation.

Despite its name, the common dolphin is a species considered endangered by the IUCN (World Conservation Union): in the Adriatic, in particular, sightings are quite rare and concern single specimens or rare pairs, an unusual situation considering that of mammals accustomed to living in herds.
