A resolution to limit President Donald Trump's war powers against Iran has been defeated in the US Senate, with the Republican majority supporting US and Israeli military operations against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Democratic Senator Tim Kaine's bill failed to secure the necessary majority, as it was defeated by a vote of 53 to 47.

Tim Kaine had introduced the resolution to ensure that US armed forces would not participate in hostilities against Iran without congressional approval. The initiative failed due to strong Republican opposition, with Senator John Fetterman voting against it and Rand Paul being the only Republican member of the party voting in favor.

Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump has indicated his intention to strengthen his executive powers, taking a more active role in conducting military operations.

Tim Kaine, along with other Democratic senators, wanted to reaffirm that Congress is the only institution that can declare war, according to the US Constitution.

During a classified government briefing, Kaine expressed his disappointment that the administration had not presented evidence of an “imminent threat” from Iran to the United States, noting that an “imminent threat” is essential to the legitimacy of war.

The Senate was not the only one to consider the bill, as it is expected to be introduced in the House of Representatives, where it is also expected to fail. House Speaker Mike Johnson said that the idea of removing the president's war powers is dangerous and destructive for the United States.
