A major police operation is underway in Berlin after a man took a woman hostage inside a supermarket in the Marienfelde area, south of the German capital. According to authorities, the incident happened shortly after 10 p.m. local time on Friday. The perpetrator has trapped the woman inside the store and is threatening her, while police are negotiating to resolve the situation without using force.

Multiple police forces, including the Special Operations Unit (SEK), as well as ambulances and fire crews, have been deployed to the scene. The area around the supermarket has been completely cordoned off for security reasons.

During the early hours of the morning, officers used a ladder to better monitor the interior of the building, while specialist negotiators continued to make contact with the perpetrator of the hostage-taking. At the time of the incident, there were also employees inside the supermarket, who were safely evacuated and are staying near the scene under police protection. They are expected to give evidence about the incident.

The supermarket is located in a quiet residential area in Marienfelde, near schools and kindergartens. So far, authorities have not revealed the identity of the perpetrator or the motives for the hostage-taking, while the police operation continues.
