The European Union has approved a new financial package of 6.1 billion euros in support of Ukraine, with a significant portion of the funds to be used to strengthen Kiev's air defense.
The package comes at a time when Ukraine is facing intensified Russian attacks and the need for interceptor missiles has increased significantly. The focus is particularly on ammunition for the US Patriot air defense systems, considered essential for countering ballistic missiles.
Brussels has called on member states to contribute missiles and other air defense equipment from their reserves. The aim is for Kiev to quickly provide the necessary capabilities to protect cities and critical infrastructure.
According to recently published data, Ukraine has already secured billions of euros through European support mechanisms, while the new funds will be used to purchase armaments and equipment related to air defense.
The need for Patriot interceptors has become even more urgent due to Russia's use of ballistic missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly demanded more systems and ammunition, arguing that current reserves are not enough to withstand a prolonged campaign of attacks.
In this context, Germany and the United Kingdom have also announced new supplies to Ukraine, including missiles for Patriot systems and other air defense equipment.
The European package aims to increase Ukraine's ability to withstand Russian attacks and protect energy infrastructure, military facilities and residential centers, especially on the eve of the winter months.
