Two American citizens have been arrested in Japan after an incident at a zoo in Ichikawa, where one of them forced his way into the area where the viral monkey “Punch” is kept. According to Ichikawa police, the arrested are 24-year-old Reid Jahnai Dayson and 27-year-old Neal Jabahri Duan, who claimed to be a singer.

Japanese authorities say Dayson climbed over the security fence and into the gap surrounding the monkey cage, while Duan allegedly filmed the entire scene. Footage circulating on social media shows a person climbing over the fence holding a giant emoji head with sunglasses, which caused panic among the monkeys, who began to flee in fear.

Zoo staff intervened immediately and stopped the two Americans before they could approach the animals. Both face charges of "violent obstruction of work," a charge they have denied. According to police, they did not have identification documents with them and initially gave authorities false names.

Following the incident, the zoo announced new security measures. Starting this week, the area where Punch is located will have limited access, while special protective nets and constant security patrols will be installed. The administration is also considering the possibility of banning video recordings in that part of the park. Officials also explained that no problems have been noted in the condition of the animals after the incident.

Punch the monkey became a global phenomenon after the zoo published photos of him hugging a toy orangutan bought at IKEA after it was rejected by its mother. His story moved thousands of users on social media and the hashtag “#HangInTherePunch” spread around the world.

The incident comes at a time when Japan is facing an increase in incidents involving tourists and foreign content creators, who are often accused of problematic behavior or breaking the law.
