Turkey will tighten gun laws and increase penalties for gun owners who pass them on to their children, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, following last week's attacks on schools in the country. Sixteen people were injured in the attack carried out last Tuesday by a 19-year-old former high school student in Sanliurfa. The gunman turned the gun on himself and took his own life.

The next day, a 14-year-old boy killed eight students and a teacher at a school in Kahramanmaras, using a gun his father had found in the family home. The gunman was shot in the leg and found dead.

Erdogan also said the Turkish government was considering additional restrictions on minors' access to social media platforms.
