Fighting in southern Lebanon has escalated again, despite a recent agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the conflict in the region.
The Israeli military announced that it had carried out overnight strikes on various targets across southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, Hezbollah reported heavy clashes with Israeli forces in border areas.
According to preliminary reports, at least 16 people have been killed in the attacks and clashes, while the number of victims may increase as operations and verifications on the ground continue.
The latest developments come at a delicate diplomatic moment, as the situation in Lebanon is considered one of the main points of the agreement signed between the US and Iran to reduce tensions in the Middle East.
The first paragraph of the memorandum provides for "the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon," as well as the commitment of the parties not to launch military actions against each other and to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon.
However, recent attacks and continued clashes show that implementation of the agreement remains fragile and that tensions on the ground continue to challenge diplomatic efforts for a lasting ceasefire.
Analysts warn that any further escalation in Lebanon could negatively affect the negotiations launched between Washington and Tehran, which aim to reach a broader agreement on regional stability.
