Brussels kicked off the holiday season with a spectacular light show on the Grand Place, with the lighting of the Christmas tree and a performance by musical choirs. The Belgian capital hopes to surpass last year's figure of 4 million visitors, according to local media. The show will run throughout December and end on January 5, 2025.

Christmas lights lit up the streets and buildings in central Barcelona on Friday (November 29), kicking off the festive season. One resident said the lights were "spectacular" and brought the city to life.

“It’s spectacular! These lights bring the city to life. They connect us to Christmas, to important celebrations. It’s exciting. It makes you want to come to Barcelona with family and friends, and take pictures. Really wonderful.”

With songs, ceremonies and a countdown, the Slovenian capital Ljubljana switched on its Christmas lights. Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Jankovic wished his city luck before pressing the button that lit up the city and delighted onlookers. The decorations included space-themed lights, stars and flying saucers.

"I see the children are tired, so let's turn on the lights, then go get some hot chocolate or some cold ice cream and then head home to sleep. So I wish you luck, dear Ljubljana, the most beautiful city in the world."
