At least 16 people have been killed and several others injured after an explosion at a coal mine in Meghalaya, India. Many more are reportedly trapped, and the mine is suspected to be illegal.

The explosion occurred around the early hours of the morning, while the narrow tunnels made it difficult for authorities to help the injured.

Such mines were once very common in the northeastern states of India, but were banned in 2014 due to the high number of accidents and the environmental destruction they cause.
