Tirana
Former judge of the Court of Appeal in Tirana, Shkëlqim Miri, has been sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison, after being accused of corruption.
The Serious Crimes Prosecution requested 4 years in prison for former judge Shkëlqim Miri, but the court accepted the summary judgment, sentencing him to a total of 2 years and 6 months in prison.
Former Tirana Appeals Court judge Shkelqim Miri was arrested on November 10 last year on corruption charges. He is accused of accepting a bribe of 30 euros in exchange for a more favorable verdict against Gentian Doda, who was accused of murder in 1997.
We recall that during the search of the apartment, the police found about 300 million old lek. Former judge Miri had stated that this amount was money from a friend of his who was going to buy a property in Tirana, while the rest was savings from his salary. Shkëlqim Miri requested freedom at the Court of Appeal, but his request was rejected.
The former judge was a member of the High Court of Justice until 2012 and previously a judge of the Court of Appeal in Durrës (before 2010). Among the sensational cases that Miri has judged is that of Gërdec, where he was part of one of the court processes.
THE EVENT IN QUESTION:
The Mati Prosecution has requested a 20-year prison sentence for Gentian Doda, extradited from the US in 2012 accused of the murder of Gazmir Dedja and Asllan Gjoka, an event that occurred in October 1997. The perpetrator Gentian Doda and the victim Gazmir Dedja were members of rival groups in Burrel, the conflict between which has continued for many years and with many victims.
The fierce clashes between the two rival groups have spread to other cities.
In 2010, the victim's brother, Halil Dedja, was also killed in Tirana, and was found dead at the entrance to the building where he lived. On the day of the 1997 incident, the perpetrator Gentian Doda and the victim Gazmir Dedja had a verbal conflict and then the defendant shot him with an automatic rifle, seriously wounding him. Asllan Gjoka was accidentally killed by the bullets. The injured man was only able to survive for two days due to his injuries, but he managed to tell his family who had shot him, identifying Gentian Doda.
Immediately after the crime, the defendant fled Albania and was arrested in 2012 in the United States of America, pursuant to an international arrest warrant issued by the Albanian authorities. After extradition, the defendant requested the reinstatement and review of the sentence previously given to him for this criminal offense.
