France, the Netherlands and Belgium recorded another 3,700 deaths as a heatwave hit. Many European countries were hit by high temperatures, with authorities warning the death toll could rise.

Experts have said the heatwave, which lasted from around June 20 to 28, was the worst ever recorded in Europe, also causing power outages, damaging infrastructure and straining health systems.

Scientists say the extreme temperatures are caused by climate change.

France's public health agency said the death toll rose by almost 30% and by 62% in the Paris region alone in the week ending June 22, at the height of the heatwave.
