Kurjani farmers in Roskovec are abandoning viticulture, planting plots with olives. Kurjani used to have about 100 hectares of vineyards, but today the area of vineyards has been reduced to 5 hectares, while farmers say that the reason for this decision is the low selling price of grapes, the lack of a market and insufficient subsidies.
Farmers say they were unable to afford the costs of growing grapes, so they were forced to cut down all the vines and plant olive trees.
According to farmers, before the 90s, vineyards occupied 80% of Kurjan's territory, with an annual production of around 200 tons, while today this tradition is on the verge of extinction. They say that every day more and more of them are collapsing and heading towards bankruptcy, due to the lack of attention from the state.
