Greece is on high alert due to the risk of fires, favored by strong winds and drought. As of today, August 15, 22 regions have been placed in category 4 fire danger, while Code Red has been activated in 10 regions.

According to meteorological forecasts, winds in the Aegean could reach up to 9 Beaufort, while winds of up to 7 Beaufort are expected in Attica and temporarily up to 8 Beaufort in the eastern part of the region.

Attica, Crete, Central Greece, North and South Aegean, Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Central Macedonia, Western Greece and the Ionian Islands have been placed on red alert. In these areas, full mobilization of Civil Protection structures has been requested, while municipalities and regions must activate the relevant coordination bodies for the preparation and management of possible fire situations.

Authorities have called on citizens to avoid any activity that could cause a fire. Burning dry grass, branches and agricultural waste, starting fires in forest and agricultural areas, using devices that produce sparks, as well as lighting fires for barbecues or other activities are prohibited.

The use of fireworks and flying lanterns is also prohibited, while in areas with very high risk, the movement and presence of people and vehicles in forests and other sensitive areas may be restricted.

Greek authorities continue to monitor the situation, while strong winds are expected to weaken during the evening hours.
