Lawyer Sokol Hazizaj, invited to the News 24 studio, commented on the situation of politicians investigated or arrested in Albania, describing as problematic the fact that many of them have been detained due to perceptions and not necessarily on clear legal grounds.
He stressed that investigations into political figures cannot last indefinitely and that their detention must be proportionate and in accordance with the law.
Hazizaj mentioned the cases of Ilir Meta and Erion Veliaj, calling their arrests violent.
Lawyer Sokol Hazizaj: Many politicians have gone to prison, because of perception, for the most part that I have observed in the process. I don't think that the restriction of their freedom should have been so flagrant. Meta's case was very violent, and Veliaj's too. They could both be called to the office. You can call the suspect and communicate the measure to him.
The investigation of politicians cannot be endless, whether it is Veliaj, Meta or Berisha. Either a politician has committed a criminal offense or he has not, this must be separated. If I were their defender, I would ask the Prosecution what is the most serious crime they have committed and that has most seriously damaged society. Unfortunately, the word of the lawyer is not very important.
