A serious accident has occurred in Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia, where an elevator with nine people on board lost control and fell from a height of about 15 meters. The released footage shows the group inside the elevator shaft just before the cabin malfunctioned and fell about four floors below. The impact sent some of the people crashing to the floor, while four of them suffered fractures in their legs and were taken to hospital.

According to authorities, there were nine people in the elevator, while the maximum allowed capacity was only six. The regional Ministry of Health confirmed that the four injured were receiving medical treatment and that none of them were in danger of life. Investigations have also revealed serious problems with the status of the building. The building was completed in 2021, but had not received the necessary certificate of operation and had not been officially handed over to the local authorities.


The building is one of about 180 unauthorized high-rise buildings in the area. Dagestan's Housing Inspectorate is investigating whether the elevator was operating legally and whether it met technical safety standards. Meanwhile, Russia's Investigative Committee has launched a criminal case to determine the causes of the accident and possible liability.
