Yemen’s Houthi militia announced a new escalation of its military actions on Monday, declaring a missile attack on Israel and declaring a complete ban on the navigation of Israeli ships in the Red Sea. In an official statement, the group said that “any Zionist movement” in the area would be considered a military target. “We declare a complete and total ban on navigation for the enemy in the Red Sea and any Zionist movement would be considered a military target for our forces,” the statement said.

The Houthis also confirmed they had carried out their first rocket attack on Israel since early April, claiming to have hit “sensitive targets” in the port city of Jaffa. They said the attack “achieved its objectives.”

"We will not stand idly by in the face of the unjust siege of our people," the group said, warning that it would respond to any escalation "with escalation."

The announcement comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, as Israel and Iran have traded air and missile strikes. One of the latest strikes reportedly hit a petrochemical complex in Iran, and the developments followed calls from former US President Donald Trump for Israel not to retaliate against Tehran.

The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, are a rebel group based in western Yemen. They oppose US and Israeli influence in the region and have often used hostile rhetoric against them. The group has said its actions are in solidarity with the Palestinians and their allies in the region. Tensions in the Red Sea remain high, as the Houthis’ warnings raise concerns about a potential major disruption to one of the world’s most strategic shipping lanes.
