President Donald Trump said his eldest son's upcoming wedding will be a special occasion and, as the father of the groom, he will try to attend, but "it's not the right time" because of the war in Iran.
Trump appeared to confirm reports that his son, Donald Trump Jr., will get married over the weekend. Asked by a reporter during an Oval Office event on May 21 whether he would attend “his son’s wedding this weekend,” the president’s response indicated that his attendance was not certain.
“He would like me to go,” Trump said of his son. “But it’s just going to be a small, private thing, and I’m going to try to do it. I’m in the middle, I said, ‘You know this is not the right time for me, I have this thing called Iran and other things.’”
“This is an issue I can’t win,” Trump added. “If I participate, I’ll get killed. If I don’t participate, I’ll get killed, certainly by the fake news that I’m talking about.”
Trump Jr., 48, announced in December during a celebratory party at the White House that he is engaged to prominent Palm Beach personality and 37-year-old model Bettina Anderson.
