Speaking from Rome, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US expects to hear from Iran today about negotiations to end the war.

"I hope it's a serious offer," he said.

Rubio also said that if reports about Iran trying to create a new agency to control maritime traffic and impose taxes in the Strait of Hormuz are true, this would be "unacceptable" for the US.

Rubio stated that he did not discuss the withdrawal of US troops from Italy with the country's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.

This comes after the US announced a decision to withdraw 5,000 military personnel from Germany and Trump threatened to withdraw more troops from Italy and Spain due to their stance on the war in Iran.

The Secretary of State stated that he is a “strong supporter of NATO,” but “some countries in Europe,” such as Spain, “denied us the use of these bases for a very important contingency,” which “created some unnecessary risks” for the US as it sought to carry out its offensive against Iran.
