New details have emerged from the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of a 43-year-old mother and her 21-year-old son of Albanian origin in the Paleokomi area of Serres, Greece. As authorities continue their investigation into the causes of the fatal collision, the testimony of the truck driver who was hit by the victims' vehicle has been released, while photographs of the mother and son have also been released, whose loss has shocked the community where they lived for years.
The 56-year-old truck driver, who was slightly injured, described the dramatic moments of the accident in a statement to Greek media. According to him, he was driving normally in his lane at a speed of about 75-80 km/h, when the vehicle driven by the 21-year-old suddenly came out in the opposite direction.
"I was driving normally in my lane at about 75-80 kilometers per hour. Suddenly I saw a car coming towards me. It seemed to have lost control. I tried to avoid it by moving to the left, but I couldn't avoid the collision. It hit me and the tragedy happened," he stated.
According to Greek media, the truck was equipped with a security camera, which recorded the moment of the head-on collision. The footage is expected to be analyzed by experts and investigative authorities to accurately determine the dynamics of the accident and possible responsibilities.
Preliminary information indicates that the vehicle was driven by the 21-year-old boy, while his mother, 43, was in the passenger seat. The collision, which occurred at around 07:30 in the morning on the Amfipolis-Drama provincial road, near Paleokomi, was so severe that both died at the scene, unable to survive their injuries.
The family, originally from Albania, had lived in Paleokomi for many years, where they had built their lives and worked honestly. According to information, the mother and son had left early in the morning for their workplace. Both were employed by the same large company that deals with the purchase and management of real estate, based in the coastal area of Ofrynio (Tuzla).
Father and daughter were left behind
The family is grieving a heavy loss after the tragedy. The father and daughter lost their two loved ones in a matter of moments, and the news has caused great pain in the local community, where the victims were known as hardworking and respected people.
The 56-year-old truck driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to Drama General Hospital, where he is out of danger. Greek Police forces, fire brigade teams and EKAB ambulances immediately intervened at the scene, but nothing could be done for the mother and son. Investigations to fully clarify the causes of the accident continue, while the analysis of the truck's camera footage is expected to play a key role in determining the dynamics of the event.
