French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that France does not want to impose tariffs on Oman and Iran for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
He noted that such a measure would set a precedent that could affect other strategically important sea crossings in different regions of the world, resulting in an increase in the cost of maritime transport and prices at the international level.
The French president also stressed that the imposition of taxes is not in line with the principles of international law, underlining that France remains committed to defending international rules governing freedom of navigation.
At the same time, he stressed that the issue of "service fees," which was added at the last minute to the agreement, is not currently the most urgent priority.
According to him, the main issue is the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the restoration of navigation in the region.
"The priority is to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, allow ships, tankers to sail and release crews who have been stranded for months," he said.
Referring to the agreement between the United States and Iran, Macron said it has already been signed electronically.
He added that the relevant annexes to the agreement are expected to be signed on Friday, underlining the need to move forward with its implementation procedures immediately.
