NATO has announced that it will begin a gradual adjustment of its military presence in Kosovo over the next year, linking this decision to the improvement of the security situation in the country.
NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe stated that stability in Kosovo has steadily improved in recent years. For this reason, the Alliance has decided to review the structure and size of its forces on the ground.
"Over the past few years, the security situation in Kosovo has steadily improved. As a result, in January NATO suspended the deployment of reserve forces for KFOR, ending a period of over two years of continuous rotation. As stability remains stable, the Alliance will reposition and gradually adjust the size of the force over the coming year," the official statement said.
According to NATO, the changes do not mean a withdrawal from Kosovo, but rather an adaptation to the new security reality. The KFOR peacekeeping mission will continue to remain in place and guarantee stability and freedom of movement.
The statement also recalled the 2023 tensions in northern Kosovo, where dozens of KFOR members were injured during clashes with local protesters. Following those events, NATO significantly increased its military presence.
The alliance emphasizes that the current situation is more stable, but remains ready to react to any development that could undermine security in the country.
