The conflict between Iran and the United States continues to escalate, as Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei reacted sharply to US President Donald Trump's warnings about Iran's nuclear program. In a sarcastic tweet, Baghaei used a reference from Stanley Kubrick's classic anti-war film Dr. Strangelove, mocking Trump's statements about the possibility of a military escalation.

The reaction came shortly after Trump declared that time was running out for Iran to respond to the latest American proposal on its nuclear program and ceasefire.

Baghaei called Washington's claim to be seeking peace while warning of bombing "absurd." "It is absurd that they claim to be seeking peace and preventing a nuclear crisis, while their proposed solution is 'a big spark,'" he wrote, referring to Trump's statement that if the ceasefire fails "only a big spark will follow."

The Iranian diplomat also urged his followers to watch the film “Dr. Strangelove,” a popular satire on nuclear paranoia during the Cold War. The verbal clashes between the two countries come at a time of high tensions in the region, while the Trump administration has set as a condition for ending the conflict the limitation of the Iranian nuclear program. On the other hand, Iran continues to insist that its nuclear program has only peaceful and non-military purposes.
