Iran's Fars news agency reported on Wednesday that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a drone attack on an Amazon data center in Bahrain. The attack came as the centers support the military and espionage activities of Iran's enemies, Fars reported.
Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing company's arm, confirmed the attack on Monday, saying the drone struck near one of its facilities in Bahrain, causing "damage to our infrastructure." The attack impacted data center operations, causing power outages and fire damage, the company said.
In addition to Bahrain, Iranian drones have also targeted other Amazon facilities, including two data centers in the United Arab Emirates. The attacks are part of a recent IRGC campaign against strategic Amazon facilities in the region, including data centers in Dubai.
AWS said the attacks caused significant structural damage and disrupted infrastructure operations. Subsequent efforts to extinguish the fires resulted in additional water damage. Despite the damage, Amazon did not report a complete outage, but warned of potential delays in recovering from the impact.
