A new scientific study warns that the Chikungunya virus, which is currently most prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, could significantly expand its geographic reach in the coming decades, including Europe and North America.
The study, conducted by scientists at Zhejiang Medical University in Hangzhou, China, highlights that climate change is creating more favorable conditions for the spread of the two main vector mosquitoes: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. According to the researchers, rising temperatures are expanding the areas where these mosquitoes can survive, increasing the risk of local transmission of the virus in cities that were previously considered safe. One of the study's authors, Dr. Yang Wu, highlights that the Asian tiger mosquito in particular is playing a key role in this process, as it is more resistant to colder climates.
Researchers warn that by the end of the century, large areas of central and northern Europe, northeastern America and eastern Asia could potentially become “new hotbeds” for the spread of chikungunya. Although the disease is rarely fatal, it can cause severe and prolonged joint pain and long-term disability. The name “chikungunya” comes from the Kimakonde language and means “to bend over in pain.”
The World Health Organization considers it one of the neglected tropical diseases, with tens of thousands of cases recorded each year worldwide. Researchers emphasize that preparing health systems, monitoring mosquitoes and strengthening preventive measures are essential to avoid large outbreaks in the future, especially in regions that have not previously encountered the disease.
