A lottery ticket worth €1 million was found in a rubbish dump in Bari, Italy, after an unusual search operation by urban sanitation workers. The ticket had been mistakenly thrown away by its owner, who initially thought she had lost the big prize. Waste management company SANB said the ticket was found “miraculously still intact” inside a rubbish truck.

According to SANB director Roberto Nicola Toscano, it all started on Sunday when the woman went to a shop near her home to check her ticket after the draw. The shop's machine showed it as invalid, as small outlets cannot process payments for large amounts. Thinking she had not won, the woman left the ticket in the shop and left. But a short time later, a family member told her that the numbers she had usually played had been declared winners. The family immediately returned to the shop, but the ticket had already been thrown in the bin and the garbage truck had left.

After a quick search, they managed to locate the truck and asked the employees to stop it, explaining the situation. Due to the danger of the accumulated waste, the search was not carried out on the road, but at the premises of a specialized company. The employees searched for a whole day among the waste, where they found many lottery tickets, but among them was the one that won 1 million euros.

When the SANB director broke the news to the woman that the ticket had been found, she burst into tears with emotion. "I would have hugged her, but we were talking on the phone," said Toscano, describing the moment of great joy for the winner who risked losing a fortune of 1 million euros.
