As talks were taking place in Islamabad, the US military said two destroyers passed through the Strait of Hormuz ahead of mine clearance work.
It was the first time that American military ships had passed through the strait since the beginning of the war.
However, Iranian state media said its joint military command denied this.
Speaking earlier, before the talks broke down, Donald Trump said: "We're crossing the strait. Whether we make a deal or not, it doesn't matter to me."
"Additional US forces, including underwater drones, will join the cleanup efforts in the coming days," the statement added.
