The weekend brought a long-awaited development for the Italian national team. Paolo Maldini has been officially appointed Technical Director of the Italian Football Federation, after accepting the offer of the new FIGC president, Giovanni Malagò. The former captain and former Milan manager has signed a four-year contract and will lead the new technical project of the “Azzurri”.

In this mission, Maldini will have former Brazilian footballer Leonardo at his side, who will serve as an advisor, while also taking over the leadership of Club Italia, the structure that coordinates the national teams.

All eyes are now on the selection of the new Italy coach. Maldini and Leonardo's first task will be to appoint a technical commissioner. Stefano Pioli, a candidate who enjoys Maldini's high regard, has also entered the race. However, Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte remain the favorites, while big names such as Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola are also on the list of candidates.

According to Italian media, the decision on the new coach is expected to be made very soon, with the official announcement likely to come within a few days.
